Full Sail University Writing Conference
Designing for a university-wide conference alone in my apartment was one of the challenges I faced as I kicked off this big project at the beginning of a global pandemic. Because of the immediate need for new ways to communicate and collaborate, I quickly developed the skills and learned the technology needed to work effectively and turn a conference into a virtual event.
I had the opportunity to work as the graphic designer and content creator for Full Sail University's 3rd Annual Writing Conference. I was responsible for following a specific brand style guide to design branded assets and marketing collateral for the conference:
"Save the date" image for Full Sail Online
Social media image
Email header
Promotional faculty spotlight images
Zoom virtual background image
Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint template
Recap video images
All images were created using Adobe Photoshop and the event program was created in Adobe InDesign.
Full Sail's Writing Conference is a single day annual conference where Full Sail students have the opportunity to attend different writing workshops and panels hosted by Full Sail faculty. This time, the conference had to be held completely online.
Due to the global Covid-19 pandemic, all communication with my supervisor was virtual. We communicated mainly through email and had an occasional call or Zoom meeting. Communication remained effective and not only were all project deadlines met, but I impressed the conference committee with my quick turn around time and ability to adjust on the fly.
Below is the brand style guide I received and followed to create all assets.
The first image I created was the "save the date" event image. I chose to have a hexagon as the main shape to showcase information. I created the hexagon by surrounding white space with various sized triangles. I filled the rest of the space with more triangles, two of them being images. I used the images, the event information, and color to create a balance. I decided to keep the hexagon theme for all other assets I designed to create brand consistency. The social media image and email header were created using the same design layout.
The faculty spotlight images were used to promote the event by showing which instructors would be hosting workshops. I used the photos given to me to create the images.
The first photo that I received was of Kari Whaley. Below is my original design idea. However, I had to adjust the image because the design would not work with all of the photos I would receive. Had the conference been in person, all headshots may have been taken professionally and with a consistent look.

Final Designs:
Since the conference would be held on Zoom for the first time, I created virtual background images to help everyone in the conference feel more united. Here are my original design variations. However, after testing on Zoom, we noticed that the bottom right hashtag would be mostly covered by each individual. Therefore, I was challenged with removing the bottom hashtag while still keeping the overall balance.
I was in charge of creating presentation templates in Keynote and Microsoft PowerPoint for presenters to use. These templates were made from scratch and all photos are placeholder images.
I was given all the information to fill the event program with. The conference committee wanted one continuous scrolling program since the event was going to be held virtually. I created the event program in Adobe InDesign.

My last task was to create recap video images to be used as thumbnails for each recorded session.
